Whether you have been using Twitter for a decade or are just planning to open an account, these tips will go a long way in getting your ideal first job –and attracting the kind of people you want. Number 5 is essential!
Last week, I concluded the series: understanding LinkedIn, a Goldmine for Freelancers, where I talked about how you can land your first job on Linkedin. If you missed it, you could read it here.
Today, I want to talk about how to land your first job on Twitter. It is an accumulation of things I have done over time that has given me a few thousand on the platform.
When people talk about social media platforms to get jobs, they mainly mention LinkedIn, Facebook Groups, Job Boards, Indeed, and the likes and skip Twitter.
Most of these people feel Twitter is only for sharing memes, cruises, and arguments between options A and B. However, don’t let this fool you. Beyond the banters lie a million dollars’ job industries that people utilize to get their dream roles and pivot to the careers they want.
Whether you have been using Twitter for a decade or are just planning to open an account, these tips will go a long way in getting your ideal first job –and attracting the kind of people you want. Number 5 is essential!
-Make your Twitter profile professional.
Your Twitter profile needs to be able to attract prospective employers, and you can only do this by making your profile professional.
However, try not to make it more formal so it won’t be boring to people. Also, make sure that your profile depicts your interests and capabilities.
An ideal bio should be straight to the point with relevant keywords to your industry.
You could talk about your academic achievements, volunteering activity, and interests that excite you.
For example, a good bio could read:
‘Business Analytics Graduate with interests in Marketing, Sales, and Automation. Travel and Dance Addict’.
Here is my bio: I ensured I captured my core competence and where I have worked/am currently working.
Furthermore, changing your Direct Message setting is advisable so that anyone can send you a message request. That way, you will not miss out on crucial messages because you and the sender are not following one another.
It is also important to put the link of your Linkedin, Website, or Medium account to the section of the website on Twitter so it can serve as your portfolio and prospective employers can easily click through to check.
Do you know another thing that doesn’t go wrong and aid your professional Twitter profile? A clear and beautiful headshot for the profile picture and a professional background picture.
If you are looking to get a job and make a productive relationship on Twitter, then you should resist the temptation to post your bikini pictures as a lady or a shirtless one as a man.
-Invest in building your Twitter Network
Building a robust network on Twitter is difficult, as it takes effort and consistency. No one gets millions or thousands of followers without putting in the work.
The first step is to follow the companies you want to work with and those who call the shots there. Also, it is important to follow industry leaders in your niche as they post captivating and educative content that will improve your knowledge base.
It is also an opportunity to follow your old friends and colleagues, as their recommendations will go a long way at some point.
Furthermore, it is not enough to follow these people. You need to engage with their posts to increase visibility.
-Engage your followers intelligently.
The next step is to foster effective engagement with your followers and network to increase visibility.
The visibility will let the decision-makers see you and, in turn, engage you. When you see a post that interests you, don’t just like and retweet; engage intelligently with it and clearly communicate your ideas.
When you contribute intelligently to tweets, you will get noticed, and gradually, you will be an authority in your niche. Usually, when there are opportunities, the first people to know and enjoy them are those who are well-known in that industry. As your engagement level increases, so are your chances of getting your first job.
-Diversify your Content
On Twitter, it is easy for content to get lost due to the sea of content available there every minute. Another way to diversify your content is to lend your voice to trends that are relevant or not to your industry and contribute humorously.
For example, you can dedicate a day or two to posting fun facts about your industry instead of posting business-related content throughout the week. You can also infuse storytelling in your content to pass your message to your prospect.
The reason for this is that — on days they don’t feel like engaging in serious posts, your witty posts will be there to lighten up their day.
As they get familiarized with your content, they start looking forward to reading from you. When they become genuinely loyal, they will think about you when there’s an opportunity for the skills you have.
Also, when you reach out to them to work for you, it will be easy for them to decide on working with you.
-Use the Twitter search option effectively.
The Twitter search box is a goldmine only a few folks on Twitter have explored. Because it is left untapped, many freelancers and independent skilled workers miss out on tons of jobs and money on Twitter.
To do this, hover over your search box on Twitter, type the keyword you want to search for, and add needed.
For example, type content writer needed and enter it. The results will be tweets about the keywords and those looking for such a service. After this, you can filter with latest, places, people, photos, and videos.
Furthermore, another keyword you can target to get jobs to apply to on Twitter through the Twitter search box is ‘we are hiring’ and filter accordingly. It will generate different tweets and profiles of those hiring, and you can start applying for the jobs you desire.
-Rounding up
So if you haven’t been using Twitter to search for jobs, you are leaving money on the table, and it’s time to make amends.
Using the Twitter platform effectively will have a far-reaching outcome on your job searches, and it is a matter of time before you land your first job on Twitter.
The mentioned steps above will go a long way in helping you set your Twitter profile professionally, engage with the relevant profiles that can hasten your job success, and also help with the kind of content you should push out on Twitter that can take you to those who need your services.
So there you have it, steps to land your first job on Twitter and how you can use the Twitter search box efficiently. As I used to say, only the action-takers succeed. These tips are what I have used in the last 1 and a half years and gotten gigs worth between $1500-$3000. If you do it well, your success story may begin.
I wish you the best always!
