The Power of the Pen: How Writing Changed My Life and Career

Firstly, I apologize for going MIA in the last two weeks. I have been swamped and battling some imposter syndrome. I also had a private freelance class that took a bit from me.

Today, I want to share a little story about how developing writing skills changed my life and gave me hope.

When I first graduated from the University of Ilorin, I struggled to find a stable job. The economy was tough, and entry-level positions were competitive.

To bring in some income, I started taking on freelance writing gigs. Some days, I will be paid #1000 for 100 words. Sometimes, I do #2/word, all in a bid to get busy.

At first, I didn’t think too much of my writing abilities. I thought writing love letters to my girlfriend was about the extent of my skills!

But after connecting with some writing mentors and practicing consistently, I started to improve.

Over time, I built up a long line of writing contracts on articles, blog posts, and other client projects.

And you know what? Early this year, I discovered I have actually made over $15,000 solely from freelance writing!

I never imagined writing could become a real career for me.

But by sharpening my skills and building relationships, I turned something I was casually doing on the side into a profitable business.

Even if writing isn’t your full-time job, developing strong written communication skills is valuable.

Being able to articulate ideas and connect with readers clearly is helpful in school, work, and everyday life.

Great writers are able to inform, persuade, entertain, and inspire.

I encourage you to keep practicing your writing, even if it’s just 15 minutes a day.

Take an online class, read widely, and challenge yourself with new forms of writing. You never know where it may lead you.

My unexpected journey into freelance writing taught me never to underestimate the power of skills, however small they may be.

With consistent effort, you can turn your talents into something meaningful.
